Devon's Snowdrop Festival

valeriehuggins0

A little touch of February sun in the forecast tempted me out after many days of gloom. We headed across Dartmoor to somewhere new - The Garden House. It is one of the finest gardens in Britain, run by a charity since 1945, with winding trails through 10 acres of different garden 'rooms'. The highlight at this time of the year is the snowdrop festival with over 350 different species.

It was delightful to see the spring flowers emerging:

But then, just as I was working out how to get the snowdrop photographs that I had envisioned, the rain came in! My disappointment was eased a little by tea and cake, but my time was running out. I grabbed the opportunity between showers to look for other possibilities. It was such a pleasure to have some light and colour to play with after such a dull, grey winter! Time to play with some ICM:

Although effective ICMs of snowdrops are still out of my reach! We walked on and I noticed a birch with peeling bark - and it was suddenly lit up by a shaft of sunlight. I saw fire:

And as we headed up the last path, aware that my companion, a keen rugby fan, was by now eager to get home for the afternoon match, I noticed some snowdrops above me on a bank. A few last shots:

Looking forward now to Springtime!
