Autumn Colours at Fingle Bridge

During my recent visit to the RAMM in Exeter, I encountered the work of Richard Long, one of the UK's most significant artists for the last 40 years. He creates new art forms with the landscape as both the medium and the subject of his work. He goes on long hikes ‘to make a new way of walking: walking as art', which he records in maps, photograph or as text works. I was particularly taken by his Textworks which in a few words give an impression of the walk.

I played around with this idea as I was processing the images from my latest explorations, walks that take just a couple of hours, often retracing my steps from many previous visits to the same place. Does each walk wear the path down into my memory, dull my senses with familiarity? Or does having my camera with me and being mindful of possibilities for creativity help me to see the familiar with new eyes?

I decided to follow in Richard's footsteps (poetically, not physically!) and add some words to my walks. I start with Fingle Bridge and an acrostic:

Falling leaves

Incandescent

Nurturing

Glade

Lichen

Energising

Rushing

Irrational

Vivacious

Eternal

Reflecting

I think this experiment merits further experimentation!
